How it works.

You call or send the quote form with your suburb and the windows or doors you want replaced. We pass the job to a local window business that can price it. That business quotes you directly and is responsible for its own registration, insurance and workmanship. We don't charge you for the enquiry. Businesses we refer work to may pay us a referral fee.

What to check before you sign.

• Registration. Domestic building work over $10,000 has to be done under a major domestic building contract with a builder registered with the Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC, formerly the VBA). Check the registration on the BPC practitioner search before you pay a deposit.
• Insurance. Over $16,000 the builder must also carry domestic building insurance for the job. Ask for the certificate, and for a certificate of currency for public liability.
• A written, itemised quote. It should list each opening, the frame system, glass type and thickness, removal and disposal, and who makes good the reveals and architraves. Get the frame, glass seal and workmanship warranty terms in writing.
• Standards. Every new window should carry an AS 2047 label. AS 1288 requires Grade A safety glass in and beside doors, within 500mm of the floor in a habitable room and in wet areas.
• Permits. Like-for-like replacement in the same opening is usually permit-exempt. Changing the opening size, adding a window, or working under a heritage overlay or in a bushfire-prone area needs a building permit through a private building surveyor.
