Standard slider vs stacker — what's the difference?

Standard 2-panel slider: one panel fixed, one panel slides — opens half the total width. Standard 3-panel stacker: one fixed, two slide (one behind the other when open) — opens two-thirds of the total width. Standard 4-panel stacker: two fixed in the middle, two slide outward to each side — opens half the total width but full unobstructed view in the middle. For the same total opening width, a stacker gives you more clear opening because more panels slide; the trade-off is more rollers and tracks to maintain. For 2.4m openings a basic 2-panel is fine. For anything 3.6m+ a stacker configuration is usually the right answer.

Can I upgrade an existing 2.4m slider to a wider opening?

Accepted Answer

Yes — this is one of the most common jobs we do in Cranbourne East, Clyde North and newer Berwick estates. The standard 2.4m builder-spec rear door from the 90s and 2000s looks small by current taste. Widening to 3.6m or 4.2m requires removing some brickwork (about 1.2m of wall on a 2.4m → 3.6m upgrade), adding a steel lintel to carry the load above, installing the new track and frame, then patching the brickwork around the new opening. Allow $5,000–$8,000 all-in for the opening modification plus the new door — well below the price of an extension and a huge lifestyle improvement.

How do sliding doors compare to bifolds for indoor-outdoor flow?

Accepted Answer

Sliders are cheaper, simpler, more weather-tight, and have slimmer sightlines — but you only ever open the panel-width portion of the opening (50–66% depending on configuration). Bifolds are more expensive, more complex (more hinges and seals), but stack completely out of the way so you get 90%+ of the opening clear when open. Berwick rule of thumb: if you use the back yard every day in summer and want true indoor-outdoor living for entertaining, bifold. If you mostly use the door for foot traffic to a deck and want the cleanest look when closed, slider or stacker. We install both — happy to walk through the trade-offs on site.

Which sliding door hardware do you use?

Tier-1 manufacturer hardware throughout — Trend, Stegbar, AWS and Wideline all use heavy-duty stainless steel tandem-roller carriage systems rated for the panel weight (residential doors run 60–120kg per panel for big stackers). Lock-and-handle sets are typically Whitco or Doric for the residential range; we upgrade to Lockwood Vista or similar on premium specs. All rollers are adjustable from the factory and we run them in at handover so the door glides smoothly and seals against the jamb properly.

Will a new sliding door make my house warmer in winter?

Accepted Answer

Yes — particularly if it's replacing an old single-glaze door with worn perimeter seals. Old 90s and early 2000s sliders typically have hardened brush-pile seals that no longer touch the frame properly, plus single-glazed glass that conducts heat out at roughly 6× the rate of double-glazing. Replacing with a modern double-glazed door with new wool-pile and bulb seals cuts heat loss through that opening by 50–70%. On a typical Berwick living-room slider (5m² of glass), that's a real difference in evening comfort and a measurable drop in heating bills.
